Official sites of the Federal Government:

  • Track Your Federal Refund: Refund status information provided by the IRS.
  • Internal Revenue Service: Sometimes the IRS gets a bad wrap, but their website can be useful for tax advice, links to forms and the latest tax news.  If you are looking for a form click here for a list of frequently downloaded forms and publications
  • Regulations.gov: If there is one thing the government seems to be quite adept at it is creating regulations.  Regulations.gov is a resource that can be used to research existing regulations as well as comment about proposed regulations.
  • Social Security Administration: Official government site with information for businesses and individuals from paying taxes to retirement.

Small Business Resources:

  • The State of Tennessee One Stop Business Resource: Great for deciding on a business name, filing a business charter, obtaining a State Tax ID and obtaining an Unemployment Insurance Number.
  • Instructions for Opening a Small Business in Tennessee: Official site by the TN Department of Revenue that explains business tax, sales tax, use tax and who is liable for each.  This page also has links to various official State forms, Applications and the Taxpayer Bill of Rights.
  • U.S. Small Business Adminstration: If you’re thinking about starting a small business, or even  if you already have one up and running this site is a great resource.  The site has a wealth of information about Funding Sources including Government Grants & Small business loans, tax information, counseling & training and other items of interest for small businesses.

Resources for Non-Profits

  • Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability: The ECFA is an accredition agency for churches and non profits.  Their website is a great resource for Churches and nonprofits seeking information about a host of accounting issues in their Knowledge Center.
  • Center for Non-Profit Management: Another great resource for non-profits.  From their website “The Center now provides a home to Middle Tennessee’s nonprofit leaders by offering a place to relax, to share triumphs, and to find solutions to problems. It is a place for nonprofit board members, executives and staff to learn how to enhance their services – and for the community to appreciate and recognize the enormous positive impact made by these nonprofit agencies”
  • GivingMatters.com: A great resource for researching non-profits in the Middle Tennessee area.
